New York-based TILT Brass is a collective of creative brass and percussion artists that has presented the work of its members and peers since 2003. Members of TILT’s two projects, the 10-piece Creative Brass Band and 6-piece SIXtet, are recognized leaders in the fields of avant jazz and experimental concert music, including trumpeters Russ Johnson and Nate Wooley, trombonists Joe Fiedler and Curtis Hasselbring, and percussionist Kevin Norton. Many vital New York venues have presented TILT Brass projects over its 6 year history including Whitney Museum, BAM Café, Joe’s Pub, The Stone, Issue Project Room, Barbés, and Tonic. In addition to performing historical and contemporary works by luminaries from the experimental tradtion, the repertoire for both groups features over a dozen original compositions created with TILT’s distinctive ensemble concept in mind. This ever-evolving list of idiosyncratic pieces includes works by Anthony Coleman, John King, Chris Jonas, Taylor Ho Bynum, and by group members Norton and Director Chris McIntyre.
On May 9, 2007, TILT Brass Band offered the first performance of its new six-piece project SIXtet in an immersive set of music by composers John King, Fredric Rzewski, and TILT director and trombonist Chris McIntyre. SIXtet featured pairs of trumpets, trombones, and tuba, all played by TILT’s unusually deep pool of creative musicians including trumpeters Nate Wooley and Russ Johnson, and trombonist Curtis Hasselbring.

Josh believes in the power of music to express the inexpressible, and places great trust in a spirit of experimentalism and continual discovery to fulfill his vision of bettering the human mind. Joshua Manchester is an innovative performer and instructor in the field of percussion. Besides playing in numerous Chicago new music groups, he has undertaken national tours as an improviser, works with contemporary choirs and children in churches and schools, performs ensemble or solo recitals in venues such as the Green Mill, Zhou Brothers Center, Elastic Arts, and the Vittum Theater. While having a strong background in traditional music, many diverse musical influences have shaped his experience. He often collaborates and performs with new music composers, including Mei-Fang Lin and William Jason Raynovich, and has also studied composition with Herbert Brun and Susan Parenti. After spending two years performing with a Javanese gamelan and studying the Indian Tabla, Joshua has taken an interest in instrument invention and field recording. All About Jazz

Scant biographical information on this Valdosta, Georgia Free Jazz/Free Improvisation cooperative. The lineup includes Zane Ally on guitar, Mike Walton on saxophone, Curtis Moody on Drums and Justin Powell on trumpet. Other sometime contributors include Tobias Mostel on grand piano and Austin Smith (trumpet & trombone). Zane Ally’s microtonal electric guitar is an uncommon and compelling recurring feature and the group’s liberal use of detuned instruments (piano, dulcimer) and artifactual sounds (clock radios) add an unexpected dimension.
